When Sarasota resident Susan Morin became a mentor to a local student she found that an inability to concentrate and learn traced to hunger. After researching the issue, she discovered that students in Title 1 schools often lack access to healthy foods at both school and home. This prompted her to request a donation of 400 pieces of fresh fruit from a local produce supplier who agreed to do it every week. Susan made deliveries herself and got to know a
range of school personnel. She then created a 501(c)(3) organization and began soliciting grants and donations from corporations and individuals to allow her to grow CHP and reach more children. Through the availability of additional financial resources, CHP hopes to include more Title I schools in the coming years.
